The strength needed for the fluid to be pumped depends on the amount, height (head), and viscosity of the fluid.

The pump can also be used for high hydraulic pressure processes. This is seen in heavy machinery. Heavy-duty equipment also needs a high duty and low suction pressure. The fluid lifts from a certain depth due to its low pressure on the suction side of the pump, while the high pressure on the discharging side of the pump brings fluid up to the appropriate amount.

Classification of Pumps

Pumps can be categorized according to the purposes they represent, the components they are made of, the liquids they handle, and even their spatial orientation. Most pumps are either positive displacement or rotodynamic.

Positive displacement pumps

Positive pumps operate by trapping and displacing fluid quantities. This allows the fluid to flow and discharge the fluid along the pump length. The fluid must be continuously transferred to continue releasing fluid from the pump.

Rotodynamic pumps

Rotodynamic pumps use the movement to produce more energy in fluid and then to transfer the fluid into the pipe. These pumps typically use a motor to turn an instrument which increases fluid pressure or increases the fluid flow rate by the centrifugal force.
